In 1981 after years of attempts, construction of the Missoula Municipal Golf Course was approved by county commissioners. Shortly thereafter a contest was held to name the new course. Out of 329 mailed in submissions, “Larchmont” was the ultimate winner. An idea sent in from Donna M. Anderson, the name is a combination of the Larch tree, which is familiar timber in the Missoula area, and the first four letters of Montana. Larch-Mont.
The course itself was designed by Randy Lilje, of the Missoula Parks and Recreation Department. Several years later in 1989 the Billings landscape and golf architectural firm Steiner-Thuesen came in and added chipping greens, a practice area, a clubhouse and a redesigned parking lot.
Larchmont is a championship course with mountain views and continues to serve as a popular destination for golfers around the area.
