In 1922 the great Walter Hagen was traveling through Billings, and on his way back to the hotel from a round of golf at the original Billings Country Club he spotted a piece of land and remarked that it would make a great location for a golf course. Situated beneath the rimrocks, the Hilands Golf Club, the oldest active golf course in Billings, was built in 1922 on that very land Hagen recommended. It opened up in July of that year as a six-hole course, with an additional three holes being added later in 1923.
A classic parkland-style course, has fully grown pine trees that line the narrow fairways and soft greens. Some have said the Hilands Golf Club is a masterpiece of a nine-hole course, and few who’ve played it would disagree with that. Known for it’s immaculate conditions, the Hilands is a bucket-list type of course for Montana golfers.
