From the very beginning of golf in the Treasure State, Anaconda has been there, having formed a golf club by 1900, just one year after the opening of the state’s first course, the Butte Country Club. One of Montana’s oldest and proudest courses, the Anaconda Country Club was formed in 1915. An 18-hole sand-green facility at the outset, the course was built by the Anaconda Company as a way to encourage healthy activities for it’s employees. By 1922 Anaconda Country Club was hosting the Montana State Amateur Championship and since that time it’s been a course where tradition meets excellence.
In the 1950s the Anaconda Country Club moved to grass greens and converted the course to nine holes as a way to keep the costs down. During this time the Anaconda Company took care of the course and clubhouse until 1981 when the club was turned over to membership.
A course with many mature cottonwoods, willow and pine trees, along with several ponds and creeks flowing through, the Anaconda Country Club remains a popular golf destination over one hundred years after first opening. A well-maintained course, it’s also very walkable and fun to play, yet challenging in parts that will test a golfers skillset. For those looking to check off some nine-hole courses in the state of Montana, there might be none better to start with than the Anaconda Country Club.
